Transport – public and private

February 7, 2010

Transport development often comes after the houses but this creates major market problems. Planning, based on social needs, environmental issues and urban development requirements, needs to be done in advance, incorporating a centralised authority that integrates all the parts of the system, including public transport, on a daily basis.

The current Buckland Park proposal north of Adelaide extremely bad planning, as it does not even cost all the infrastructure, of which transport is only one part, needed for the houses that are planned.

Notes

Transport Oriented Development, focussed on rail lines, is a popular concept but recent developments in bus technology may remove many of the arguments for it. Cheltenham Racecourse in Adelaide, an essential stormwater recycling site, is an example of the misuse of the TOD concept. Paris and Lyon have successfully transformed their inner city transport by introducing thousands of bicycles for hire
